ABL have been based in Wellingborough since our foundation in 2003, so when we heard about the new local charity, Wellingborough Homeless Forum, we were keen to get involved.
Wellingborough Homeless Forum is formed from a collective of local organisations and individuals who have come together to provide aid, accommodation and advice to those who are homeless, or under threat of homelessness, in the Wellingborough area. As part of their work, the Forum have been running a pilot scheme for a roaming night shelter which provides urgent overnight accommodation for those in need.
ABL’s involvement began just before the test scheme opened its doors in March 2018 after we saw an appeal for a PAT (portable appliance test) for their second hand toaster. With only days to go before the doors opened for the first time, we offered to donate a new toaster for use at one of the venues. After meeting with representatives from the Forum, we are also happy to have been able to provide a Smart Charge module so that mobile devices can be quickly and safely charged overnight by those using the facility.
Wellingborough Homeless Forum are looking for volunteers willing to be trained and DBS checked to join the team; roll mats and sleeping bags for the guests. There are currently 17 rough sleepers or sofa surfers registered to use the shelter, and between 8 and 10 are using it each night it is open.
If you or your business would like to get involved, please contact Valerie Anslow on 01933 384488 or visit the Forum’s Facebook page for more information.
